With BT Infinity (and other PPPoE WAN connections) the maximum MTU is 1492, so the maximum ping size is 1464. I'd guess that PMTUD is being used on BT's routers as my ping only allows me to set a packet size of 1460 bytes before it gets fragmented. That means the MTU is 1488, which is an odd figure to set it to statically.
